What is Total Wellbeing?

What does wellbeing mean to you? Does it mean that you are fit and healthy? I am sure you all have your own interpretation to what wellbeing is but I guess many of you place most importance to your physical health. Total wellbeing is so much more.

Let me share what I believe total wellbeing is all about.

The body plays a big role in wellbeing. What would we be without a healthy body? This means that we need to look after it. We need to feed it good nutritious and healthy food, we need to “service” it regularly – with that I mean regularly go and do check ups at your doctors/naturopath etc. – just like we service our car. We need to stay tunes in and listen to the body’s signals. The body gives us numerous clues if something is not “right”. The body is amazing! By learning to connect with it will be your most valuable tool ever. You need to take control and not ignore if the body is telling you something. We need to prevent disease by doing the best we can to take care of the body.

Not only does the Body play a role in total wellbeing. The mind does too! I am sure you have many times heard – “Healthy Body – Healthy Mind”. Adopt a healthy positive outlook on life. Get involved in continues training and education to stimulate the mind, interact and socialize with others will all help you to achieve wellbeing. You need to reduce the stress levels in your life. A good way is to start doing relaxation, pilates, yoga, meditation. I also believe in creating a “clutter-free” life & being organized – this will all help us reduce & to become more resilient to the stress we all have around us.You may think this is all that affects and creates wellbeing but there is more.

“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” —Hippocrates

What you eat is so important. I am sure you have heard the saying – “You are what you eat”. By adopting a balanced and varied diet you will look and feel better. It is vital to a person’s wellbeing. We need to make sure we eat a balanced diet – selecting a combination of foods that meet our body’s nutrient needs. It is advisable to maintain a healthy body weight, eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, reduce fat and salt intake and generally not over-indulge. At the same time, it is important that we enjoy our food. Eating a meal can be a social experience, a time to talk to others and relax.

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” —World Health Organization

Our environment plays a huge important role in wellbeing. I love living by the coast myself and it plays such an important role for my children as well. We are very blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world. It is important for us to realize that the environment plays a very important role in our wellbeing – particularly for our kids.

“The quality of a life is determined by its activities” —Aristotle Physical

Activity is vital for total wellbeing. It needs to be part of everyone’s daily routine and it is particularly important for young people. Exercise helps to build up stamina and strength and manage body weight. Hey – you may even enjoy exercising! At least choose the type of exercise you do enjoy. There are so many activities you can choose from – walking, cycling, jogging and swimming are all ways of staying fit, and some people enjoy the added social benefits of team sports. Getting involved in community activities and cultural events can also be stimulating and rewarding, particularly in terms of our mental and emotional health.

So, wellness is not just about avoiding illness and staying fit. It is about adopting a healthy attitude to life – so that you can improve the quality of life! And the best thing is – You decide to do it & I know you can if you want. Wellbeing is about making “smart” choices. It is about remaining in control of your lifestyle & most of all it is about enjoying yourself!
